living independently...

This week I am living in San Marcello in Toscana. It is an extremely SMALL town in the mountains where everyone knows everyone. Walking down the street everyone greets one another, and, being an outsider, I get a lot of stares because people do not know who I am!

Let me count the ways in which I love this town…

There are 3 tutors because it is a small town. Mark, Sara and myself. Our house families are all friends, and their children (our house brothers and sisters) are the same age and are friends. Everyday after camp we go to the gelatteria all together and get a gelato. Then, we usually go for a walk and head back to our homes which are all within a 2 minute walk of each other. We are forming such a strong bond with the house siblings and the tutors very quickly. I am thoroughly enjoying my time with them after camp.

The families are amazing! They’ve organized things for every night! Monday we all went to Marks house to hang out. Tuesday night Mark and Sara came to my place after dinner to watch a movie, tonight we’re all going to Pizza with the families and camp directors, tomorrow we’re going to a Medieval Festival in a nearby town, and Friday we’re going to Pistoia! It’s an action packed week. I basically only have time to shower, eat and hang out! There isn’t really any spare time which is kind of crappy because I haven’t been lesson planning as much, but at the stage I am so content that Im not too preoccupied about it.

The town is amazing. Everywhere you look there are mountains. The school is on a hill and the outside area overlooks the town and the mountains. It’s like a picture perfect town where you could snap a shot anywhere and it would look like a postcard. This is the first small town I’ve been to and I am so happy here. It’s quaint and cute, the main Piazza looks like something from a Disney Theme Park with the buildings, bar’s and little fountain in the middle. Very cute!

For the first time I am living on my own! I have the whole upstairs on a house to myself. The Nonno lives downstairs but he is quiet and keeps to himself. I only see him at dinnertime. Actually, he left today for a few days so I have the house to myself until Thursday evening! Not too shabby. I’m only ever alone at night before bed so it isn’t too bad. I do feel like an adult though, I cook myself breakfast, do my laundry and hang it to dry. Feels like I am living on my own hehehe

So far I love this town! I don’t leave until Sunday for Belluno so I am excited to see what the family has planned for me on Saturday! It is Ferragosto so it is a big holiday but I hope they do something with me. Take me to Lucca or Florence or something!? Stay tuned and I will keep you posted….

nostalgia for the world I live in...

I am sitting here in a lovely family room in Calcio Bergamo, Italy. A little over a month left and my adventure is coming to an end. I cannot believe that I can see the Windsor light…. It came so quickly and I am sad to think my time is almost over. Being in Italy has taught me so much already. I have been so fortunate in my experiences, with Italian families, the scenery, fellow tutors and camp directors, and of course, the children.

This has been an adventure to remember. Looking at pictures from Paris which wasn’t long ago, I feel like it was a dream. Someone else’s life. I feel like I am living some else’s life everyday actually. The role of a lifetime doesn’t usually come my way. However, I sought out this role and am so glad I had the courage to leave behind a life I adored for ¼ of a year. Leaving behind family, friends, a boyfriend, work and comfort was extremely difficult for me. I always wanted to travel and see the world, but when it came down to it, I feared I was more of a talker than a doer. Turns out, I am a doer and want to continue this life. As many of you know I am going to audition for Theatrino which is an acting troupe based out of the same company I am working for now. They travel in groups of 3 to different schools all over the country doing hour shows in English, promoting the English language. It would be a great opportunity and I am so happy for all the support I am receiving from the people in my life about persuing this goal. I would be gone for 6-8 months, and only home for about 3.5 before I would leave again. It’s a big step but I know I am ready to take it. Unfortunately, I’ll have had to make sacrifices if I get accepted, and that isn’t easy either. Letting go of people I loved is never easy, and I wish life could just work out amazingly. Unfortunately, life never works out how we want it to. But we plan and hope for the best regardless. I am trying to take things day by day and deal with the circumstances right in front of me instead of trying to conquer the world.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a life. So I am taking this opportunity to explore the European life as much as possible before I return to the life I know and love. The way of life here is so different. Laid back and positive. People work hard and enjoy their days off but its just different. Everything is no problem and people genuinely seem to care about one another. The language is beautiful and even though there are days where my brain is exhausted from translating, I am still in love with it.

So here’s to Europe- the adventure of a lifetime, the adventure I love, the adventure I wish to continue in the near future!

an ode to Gramma...

Some say Death is the next big adventure after life. I’d really like to believe that, but unfortunately I don’t know what life holds for us after we pass. The reason I ponder this tonight is because my grandmother passed away this morning. She had been sick for sometime and before I left for Europe, visiting her deep down I knew it would be the last time I would see her alive. However, I don’t think you can ever fully prepare yourself to lose someone you love.

The call came around 6:45pm from Brad. Initially when I heard his voice I thought it was a call to say hey and to talk. I was very happy to hear the familiarity on the other end of the phone. My excitement quickly vanished as the words rolled out of his mouth “I don’t know if you’ve heard….”. And I hadn’t. I hadn’t checked my emails and my dad never called. Naturally, my heart hit a jolt and I wasn’t sure how to react. Crying didn’t seem appropriate at the time because I wanted as many details as I could get from him. Turns out she has been at home since the beginning of June which is good because she wanted to pass at home. In the last week however she hadn’t been taking any meds and was in excruciating pain. My heart goes out to her. I believe she wanted to die to be with my Papa. Even after 22 years she still missed him very much and wanted to be with him.

Now the chaos begins. I am not home for the funeral arrangements which is extremely hard for me. I feel as if it will be something that will be hung over my head for years to come from my Uncle and Dad. Unfortunately, being in Italy it isn’t possible for me right now. I only hope they understand and know that I am thinking of them constantly. Mourning in a different way, although my presence won’t be there, I am still in pain and affected.

We are such selfish people. When someone dies, instead of rejoicing for their happiness onto a better place, we only think of ourselves and the pain we are going through. I am trying to hard to cling to fact that she is no longer suffering and is where SHE wants to be. Even though the void seems to grow deeper with each passing letter I type. The keyboard is actually becoming hard to see because the tears welled in my eyes. Death is never easy, for those left behind there are memories forever burned into our imagination and we must hold tight to them. Never losing sight of the times we shared with these special people and the bonds we formed. She will forever be my Gramma and I have nothing but admiration and great things to say about her. My memories are all fond and filled with fun and laughter, specific smells Sunday phone calls and delicious foods. Feeding DeeDee dog biscuits and the hot tar in the summer.

I have never known anyone like her and never will. Death is a part of life, whether we want it or not.

I love you Gramma. I always will. You taught me a lot growing up and I thank you for being you. May you rest in peace now and always.

You will never be forgotten.

vineyard bike ride

What started out as a lovely bike ride turned into a hill climb from hell! First of all, let me state that I do not remember the last time I rode a bike. It’s probably been 6 years at least! Needless to say when I first started, I was a bit wobbly! It was highly embarrassing pedaling down the main street trying to keep my balance and drive in a straight line. After about a minute I got the hang of it again though! Thankfully! Hahaha I also feared for my life on some of the streets because I wasn’t completely confident and cars come extremely close!

The school we work at is on a hill, so I wanted to see what was on the other side of the hill. I had no idea how much farther uphill I would have to pedal past the school, but I didn’t think it would be as far as it was! The climb really started to burn in my legs so I got off the bike and began walking up the hill. Holy hell was I sweating! Sweating like 10 men and I was in pain. However, this was about 15 minutes into the climb and I could see what looked like the top of the hill so I kept on trekking. Needless to say, I made it to the top, and was glad I put in the sweat. The view was gorgeous! I didn’t want to stop on the side of the road so I kept peddling and found a vineyard on the side of the road. There was a little open area so I sat there. The vines were growing behind me, directly in front of me was a house with a huge yard and farther on all I could see were vineyards, trees and open land. To my left was the real sight! The downward slope of the hill, open fields, random homes, and in the farther distance, mountains! Mountains that were as far as my eye could see. It was such a tranquil place. The occasional car or vespa passed, but the only other noise was that of the tree frogs. I had my ipod and played some “think” tunes, just enjoying and soaking it all up with me eyes. I couldn’t believe such a beautiful place existed in San Colombano, it’s so flat and very much like Windsor. But a 25 minute bike ride away is a gorgeous view! If I have the courage to make the trip again this week I will def bring my camera. I doubt pictures will capture what I am seeing but I will try my best. Maybe I will do a little video. The bike ride back was a breeze, literally, I hardly had to pedal because it was mostly downhill ! A gorgeous afternoon.

a tale of star crossed lovers

So, I went to Verona for the weekend and fell in love. I actually didn’t think Verona existed and was pleasantly surprised to find it did exist and is actually known as “Little Rome”.

We bought our tickets the morning of, and online it said we transferred in Milano Central Station. So, we go to Milano, just chatting on the train not paying attention, and we go to find our binario but cannot find the train number… WELL! I look at the ticket and see we were supposed to get off at Milano Lambrate. There was a train leaving from Central but it wasn’t a regional train and we could have gotten heavily fined. So, we decided to hop on a train to Lambrate and pray they didn’t look at our tickets. Being a 5 minute train ride we thought we would be safe. We didn’t even sit down, just stood in between cars and thankfully got off at Lambrate and didn’t miss our train to Verona! So, we were on our way in a nice air conditioned car.

From the moment we arrived I loved it. The main Piazza is lined with restaurants on the left hand side. On the right is a mini park with a fountain, benches trees and a statue of Vittorio Emanuelle II. Behind that is the Arena (mini colosseum) and the the shopping district. We walked around for a while trying to find our hostel. I decided to start asking people and we eventually found it, right in the middle of the shopping district! Perfect location!

The hostel was great. Cheap, only 25euro each. In a nice area, very clean and the room was huge for 3 people! The only thing was we had to share a bathroom with everyone else but, it was clean and I didn’t mind. The only issue I had was the heat. There wasn’t a fan, and the little window didn’t let in any air. We all woke up wet! It was honestly like I just had a shower. Disgusting, I know! You’d think after 9 weeks in heat I would be used to it but I still am not used to the fact that I am ALWAYS sweating, and never feel clean. Ah the joys of Europe!

So anyways, back to Verona! We began by having some lunch. Pizza Please! Then set out on the journey towards Juliet’s house. We found it no problem. The infamous graffiti wall was there. I brought a paint marker for the occasion and we all signed the wall. It was glorious! After the wall you walked into a courtyard complete with Juliet’s bronze statue and her balcony! Clare and I paid the 6 euro to go inside her house which was basically a modern art exibit by a local artist. It was cool because we could stand on the balcony, and there was a replica of her room from the original film version of the story. As well there were the original costumes the actors wore in the movie. I was very excited by this and actually felt like I was walking back in time and looking at what could have been Juliet’s room. Once we were done we went into the little gift shop and I bought some overpriced souvenirs. Overpriced became the phrase of the weekend! Everything was ridiculous. I went to ask how to get to Romeo’s house when James came up to us and said “someone give me your camera quick” and he took off. Once we found him it was incredible – he was back in Juliet’s courtyard where there were two actors acting out the famous balcony scene. Once that was done we were invited up for a free show. They acted out 3 famous scenes from the play in Italian. I was in 7th heaven and got goose bumps and choked up on more than one occasion during the show. I was watching Romeo and Juliet in Italy, at Juliet’s house in Verona. I could not have been more lucky. After the show I asked if I could take a picture with the actor playing Romeo and he said my Italian was beautiful! I was just on such a high after that for a few hours! Not to mention he was gorgeous! The most beautiful Italian I have seen thus far in my opinion.

We tried to find Romeo’s house but failed. It looked like it was going to start to rain so we opted to climb the tower to see the view of Verona. BEEEEEUTIFUL! I only wish my camera could capture what my eyes saw.

We did a bit of shopping and had a lovely dinner than did a nice roundabout of the city in search of a disco. Needless to say we didn’t find one, but we did walk to the Castle and got to appreciate it at night and go for a nice walk around the city. The Arena was a site to see all lit up. James brought a cigar so we sat by the fountain and he smoked it. I was feeling fun so I tried it as well. I didn’t like it though. I love the smell, but the taste, not so much! So that was basically our first day. We finished off at a pub just chillin and talking.

Sunday we had to be out by 10 so we woke up early and went on our merry way. On our way to find a café for breakfast we passed a grocery store so we went in. Bought some Nutella, bread, water and fruit for 5 euro! We took our gourmet breakfast to the Castle and ate overlooking the river, castle and mountains. Beautiful start to the day! We did some exploring at the castle and ended up at a park. We were all exhausted so we took a nap on benches for an hour to the sounds of the wind and tree frogs. Not too shabby! We then had lunch, did a bit more shopping, grabbed our stuff (the hostel let us keep our bags there) and were on our way to an Internet café for James. He needed to tie up some loose ends for the beginning of his 3 week solo tour of Europe. We ended up taking the long way back to the station and walked with our stuff in the intense heat for about 45 minutes. Nice little tour of the residential area of Verona! Before I knew it I was on a train ride back to San Colombano for another week of camp!

When in Rome...

Aawww Roma! The place I love. From the moment off the train and looked around at the Termini Train Station I knew I was someplace great. The train station is basically 25 binarios (platforms) connected to a mall. I took some pictures, it was really cool. I could have easily spent all day there. There were 3 levels to the shopping area of the station, and 3 exits to different main streets of Rome. It was a bit overwhelming at first, I found myself roaming around, but once I took a breath and got my Barings, I was good to go.

The hotel / apartment was kind of in a cute little area. Kind of hidden from things but close to Piazza’s and cafes, and only about a 25 minute walk to any major areas of Roma. We walked to the Colosseum, Vatican and everywhere in between.

My first evening we went to the Trevi Fountain which was a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be. It was gorgeous at night, all lit up with the water shimmering crystal blue. There were hundreds of people crowded around, it’s a busy place at night! We threw in our coins for luck and took quite a few pictures. I was very impressed by the fountain at night and was glad it was the first thing I saw. We walked down Via Del Corso which is the main shopping street, and even though the stores were closed it was a nice walk. We had dinner together and took our time walking back. I tried very hard to orient myself with where I was and where I wanted to go so I wouldn’t get lost in the morning. By the end of the day I was exhausted from all the traveling, so I passed right out.

Wednesday morning I was up nice and early at 8 am! Showered, and got ready for my fun filled Roman day! I had breakfast and was on my way to the Roman Forum. By 10am I was already sweating, but that made me happy, it was a nice contrast to the cold in Liverpool. Once I got my ticket and stepped foot on Forum ground I was elated with joy! I had to call mom, even though it was 5am for her. I was just so excited to be among the Caesar’s that I had to tell someone! The forum was really cool. A lot of it is in ruins, but even the ruins were amazing. The details that went into every pillar were amazing. Words, and designs made it all so marvelous. The main arch way is still intact which was a great sight to see!!! I loved it. I made my way up Palatine Hill which provided a great view of the Forum and Rome. I thought of the many Ancient Eyes that looked over the Forum before mine, and the things they would have seen. Invasions coming, horses and chariots, people going for strolls along the walkway… I let my imagination run wild for a few minutes. On Palatine Hill are the remains of Remus’ home and Augusts’ . They don’t look like much, mostly blocks of where the walls would be, but it was still interesting to see where they would have lived and how. The ceilings were not high by any means which leads me to believe the men were not very tall. As well, the walkways are all cobblestone and I understand why their calve muscles were sooo defined. I was in so much pain after all the walking and for the rest of my time there. Def. think I got shin splints from it. Every time we left the app to walk I died! If I wasn’t going at a snail pace then I was in trouble.

The next day the three of us went to the Vatican, Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. The Vatican was gorgeous on the inside. All the different methods of architecture, Marble, Stone, paintings, gold… it was beautiful. The outside however was not as impressive to me. It looked more like a municipal building than a church to me. I am not sure what I was expecting, but that def wasn’t it! It was really cool in the front, it’s like a major piazza just open space for people to walk in or do whatever. I’m sure the purpose was for masses and such, but it was nice to walk in there, dance, do whatever we wanted ya know!!?? The Vatican museum was fun too, the only thing is nothing is marked. They want you to pay for a guided tour so we just had to figure things out on our own and guess as to what things were and what age they were from. We walked through and took some pictures, enjoyed some things, but the main thing we wanted to see was the “Creation of Man” in the Sistine Chapel. It was a long and windy walk, but we made it. The room was covered from floor to ceiling in paintings and although it was cool, I turned to Alyssa and said “I don’t really care about this, I want to see the Creation of Man” and she said “It’s here” ! we laughed but at the same time I was expecting it to be it’s own entity, the center point of the room and very ornate. Instead, it was amongst other paintings and nothing really special. I looked at it and began to appreciate the room more because I realized Michael Angelo painted everything, the amount of time and sweat that went into it were mind boggling. So I did end up enjoying the Sistine Chapel very much for that reason.

My last day (Friday) I went to a museum in search of the Romulous and Remus statue. On my way through the museum I almost pooped my pants when I saw … wait for it … The Dying Gaul! It was incredible. I felt like my Humanities text book was coming to life before my very eyes. The detail put into his face was incredible and I got goosebumbs as I sat there looking at his facial expression while he looked down at his shield. I took a moment to really take a step back and enjoy where I was. I can’t allow myself to become desensitized to where I am at the present time. I am among Ancient stories, and architecture and things that people read about more than they experience. So I soaked in my surroundings and continued on my journey towards my two Roman friends. Eventually after 2 wrong turns, Egyptian pottery and ancient grave tablets I found my statue! It was perfect! The myth of the birth of Rome was before my eyes and I couldn’t help myself… I touched it! I know you’re not supposed to but no one was around and I felt I would truly know I was there if I could feel the marble under my skin. It was amazing! I must have stood in the room for 15 minutes, walking around the statue, looking at it, and appreciating it for what it was. I took some pictures, not the best because I couldn’t use flash, but that’s ok. At least I have proof I was there! On my way out I walked by an Ancient Roman Chariot intact!!!!! It was encased in glass and my pictures are extremely blurry of it. It was incredible to see! The platform was worn where they used to stand, but the rest was jewels (some missing) and ivory lace. Stunning.

I ended my trip at a restaurant next to the Trevi with two great friends! It was a wonderful “Roman Holiday” and I am so thankful I was fortunate enough to be in Rome and experience the culture.

Liverpool 2

So today was incredible! I still am having trouble wrapping my head around the fact that I am in Liverpool, walking the steps of John, Paul, George and Ringo. I did so much today, but at the same time relaxed and enjoyed where I was in each moment.

I began my day by heading to the internet café with Jules. When we parted for the day he reminded me to be careful on one road because a lot of Meth addicts go for their fix Monday morning… hmmmm sketchy! I checked my emails, booked my flight out ( L ) and was on my way for the adventure ahead.

Albert Dock was first on the agenda. This is where the “Beatles Story” and “The Fab Four Store” are. I figured those were two things I really wanted to see so it was top priority. The Beatles Story took about an hour to go through. It basically recounted their fame with memorabilia, quotes and copies of posters, billboards etc. It was very fun to go through, however, I didn’t learn much and was disappointed in the lack of Beatles memorabilia. I am in Beatle Land! I figured they’d have gold records and what not. That’s alright though, I still enjoyed myself thoroughly and am glad I went. At the Fab Four store I bought some stickers, buttons and a souvenir program on the four boys. Along with my ticket I got a pass to see the John Lennon “The White Feather” exhibit created by Cynthia and Julian Lennon. I made the trek there and was very happy I did. There were postcards John had sent, records, personal belongings, unknown pictures and recounts from Julian, Cynthia and Paul. At the end there was a Peace Tree, so like a good fan I filled out a postcard and added it to the tree. It was amazing to look at some of the postcards and where they were from. Literally all over the world. I would have loved a picture but you couldn’t take any at the exhibit. My postcard had –“you may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one…” I thought it was fitting because people from all walks of life were coming here to leave their mark. I put my name and location on the back, along with the date, gave it a kiss and put it on the tree.

From here I took the bus to Penny Lane! I also wanted to go to Strawberry Fields but the bus route looked a bit complicated and I really didn’t feel like getting lost in Liverpool. Plus, a local told me it was kind of a dodgy area, so I settled for a solo trip to Penny Lane. I was happy I went! There was the barber shop, café, shelter and the street sign (of course). I took pictures and a breath at each of the locations, and thanked my lucky stars for being fortunate enough to actually be in those places. As England promises- it rained! And there weren’t any stores or areas with shelter so I went in the Penny Lane Wine Bar and had a cup of tea. I felt It fitting for the time and place. Once the rain stopped I made my way back to the Liverpool 1 and Matthew Street area.

Once on Matthew Street, I went into the souvenir shops again and bought some cool Abbey Road cufflinks, and a tee for Jules as a thank you for everything. I really wanted to go for a drink at the Cavern Club but I forgot my passport (typical me) so I opted for a juice that was on the house! I love the Cavern! Ahaha I pulled up a chair, drank my juice and let my imagination run completely wild. I thought about what it would have been like when they actually played, how packed and sweaty it was. It was humbling to be in the place it all started.

On my way back to shop I walked by Cavern Walks which looked like one store but once inside it was like a mini mall. There was a café FULL of pictures and memorabilia called “Lucy in the Sky”. It was so cozy inside! By this time it was after 3 and I hadn’t eaten. I was too concerned with seeing everything, there’s always time for food! Haha But I ate a muffin at the café and once again, soaked in my surroundings. With a full belly I was ready to do some hardcore shopping.

Most of my money went to Primark. An AMAZING English store that is so cheap! I got a whole new wardrobe for 55 pounds. Jeans, 3 pairs of shoes, jewelry, shirts, a skirt, and belt…. I couldn’t believe how much I bought and for the price! It was great. 2 hours later, I was finished in the store and walked out to pouring rain!

I made a beeline for the train station, and was soaked to the core! It was pretty awesome. I knew I was England at this moment. Wet, Cold and on the train passing the industrial sector. Awesome day!

To finish the day, Jules and I had some authentic fish and chips! The meal was huge! I couldn’t finish it even though I tried very hard. It was absolutely delicious. After dinner I downsized my belongings and left a bunch of stuff at Jules’ house to make room for my new wardrobe! Then I had a cup of tea and fell asleep while Jules was busy doing coursework.

All in all, I am in love with England! I love the people, everyone was so friendly, the accent, the scenery. It was amazing for me. I could definitely live/work here. I am just so extremely happy here. I found I always had a smile on my face and just wanted to stay as long as possible, making the most of my time. I look forward to London to see if it is awesome as Liverpool! I am so glad I got to experience the birthplace of the four lads who shook the world.

you may say I'm a dreamer....

GAH! I am in Liverpool!!! I can’t believe I have actually made the trip here. And the best part, I am staying in a real Liverpool house, enjoying the FULL experience. I could honestly burst I am so happy and in love with it here.

On Friday I arrived very late, half 11 so Jules came to collect me and we got a chance to catch up on the ride back to his place. He lives in High Town which is about 30 minutes from downtown Liverpool by train. We had a cup of tea and went to bed. Saturday I was able to sleep in but then we hit the town. He walked me around all the attractions and gave me an overview for Monday when I am free to roam the streets and see the sights all day.

We went to the Cavern Club which really did me in. Even though it wasn’t the original, I was overwhelmed with emotion that I was truly in Beatles Land and couldn’t be happier. Inside the walls are covered in signatures, there is a red telephone booth and a great homage to the Beatles. It was everything I thought it would be and it just blew my mind that I was actually there. On Monday I plan to sit and have a drink and just enjoy where I am, embracing my surroundings and make the most of them. We passed the Beatle museum which I will go into on my own on Monday. I also want to travel to Penny Lane and the Albert Dock. As well, there is Liverpool 1 which has a boatload of shopping. I feel as if I am going to get up very early so I can enjoy everything to the fullest and not be rushed.

Jules and his family have been fantastic. His niece and nephew are here so they have been keeping me busy! Keira, 5, and Conor, 8, are full of energy and are always looking for my attention. I adore them. They have red hair and are British, so, by association, they are Weasley Children! As well, their accents are amazing! I am in my glory here with the accents all around me. I heard one guy speaking with the thickest Liverpudlian accent I had ever heard and hardly understood what he said. It was awesome. I am in my element here and could probably live here just because of the people and how they speak. Everyone has been really nice and I am happy here.

Today (Sunday) Jules and I went for a walk in through some forest to a beach. It was a beautifully calm place where you could hear the wind through the trees. It reminded me a lot of cottage country in Ontario and that made me so happy inside and content with where I was. When we got to the beach, luckily it was a nice day and there were a lot of people there! Not too many swimmers (it wasn’t that nice) but people walking and just relaxing on the beach. It’s the Irish sea where we were and the water was a bit murky, but it was nice to see a beach with actual sand!

It has been an amazing weekend for me. My emotions have been all over the place, I am so relaxed and at ease, enjoying being with an English speaking family and just in awe at the fact of where I am and the places I am going. While walking down Matthew Street on Saturday I thought to myself, “wow, this place actually does exist”. It’s the most amazing feeling to be somewhere I’ve always wanted to go but never thought I would actually get to. I look forward to Rome and going back to Italy, but I can’t lie, England agrees with me, and I look forward to Scotland, Ireland and London next month.

Let it be …

2 weeks of Bliss

Pessano con Bornago
Bergamo
Lake Como
Milano

Looking back on my past two weeks I have nothing but amazing memories of my house family, camp and the tutors. It was an incredible time for me and I am so grateful for such an amazing experience.

Let me begin with my house family. Silvano, Roberta, Floriana and Veronica were absolutely incredible. For the moment they picked me up at the train station I was instantly comfortable and in love with the family. They held themselves with such poise but were so friendly and welcoming, that even after a hot and sweaty train ride, I couldn’t help but smile and be chatty with them. They showed me the utmost best possible hospitality I have received. Every evening was a joy eating with them and sharing stories after dinner, often talking past 11pm. The Nonni were incredible as well. Unfortunately they spoke Milanese so I didn’t understand much of what they were saying but I tried to contribute as much as possible and often Silvano translated so we could have a semi-normal conversation. On the weekend they took me shopping, to Bergamo, Lake Como and I travelled to Milan as well. In between I had 2 nights out with the tutors (once to Gorgonzola and once bowling) and there wasn’t any hassle. Silvano said I was like another daughter to him which almost brought tears to my eyes. They reminded me so much of home and my family that I just gelled with them and enjoyed my time thoroughly. Floriana is so much like me, outgoing and always in a great mood. She is 16. I have offered for her to come to Canada and stay with me for awhile, I really hope next summer she seriously considers it. And Veronica (12) although a bit shy, she was awesome. Always smiling and throwing in her two cents. I just cannot say enough positive things about the family. I truly consider them my Italian family !

Bergamo was a beautiful city. I had never heard of it before but I am so glad I got the opportunity to visit it. Citta Alta is up in the mountains and you have to take a lift to get up there. Once you exit the lift you are submerged into a world of narrow streets, shops, cafes, a piazza, 2 cathedrals and lots of tourists! I had a lovely time just walking through the city. We didn’t buy anything but we did go into some of the shops and just relaxed, had some gelato and a very beautiful day. I love the pictures of Bergamo because it really is a pure Italian City that has wonder and culture wrapped into one.

Lake Como was a nice place as well. I wasn’t completely in awe of the lake, but I did love the mountains surrounding the lake and the fact that I could see Switzerland. Again, we walked around, shopped, had gelato and relaxed on a park bench for a while just soaking up the views of the lake and mountains. George Clooney has a home in Como and I saw the general area of where his home would be. Unfortunately, we didn’t merit an invitation to go and have a Martini together. We went for dinner on the lake which was a real treat. We got to see the sunset and I tried to take some pictures, but of course it didn’t capture the essence of the view. A storm was brewing unfortunately and we got caught in it at the restaurant. We had to take our dessert inside, and finish inside. When we were finished eating the rain was still coming down (of course we were parked far) so we stayed for an espresso, or in my case café latte. The rain still came down and the waiter brought us some Limoncello. The rain stopped and of course, me being chatty I wasn’t finished drinking so I had to shoot my limoncello, down my cafe latte and boot it to the car. It was an adventurous and relaxing day.

Milano was alright. The duomo was incredible and breathtaking. But other than that, not going to lie, I wasn’t blown away. The BIG sale was in effect so everything was on sale, so I did buy some jewelry for a euro and a cute skirt for a euro, but, other than that I didn’t go into crazy shopaholic mode. Which is probably a good thing, seeing as my suitcase is already jam packed.

The tutors were really great fun! Alison is from the US and she was great! A lot of energy and really was able to connect to the kids and get on their level. She is pretty sporty as well so she played with them at lunch a lot of the time as well. Victoria is from London England, and she was great fun! She actually did the voice for the Harry Potter video games, so obviously when I found out I kind of got really excited and had to video tape her doing some of the lines! She was a really cool girl though, and I hope when I visit London in September her and I can catch up and go out together. Mitch was the only guy but he didn’t seem to mind. His quick wit and sarcastic humor kept us all in great spirits and on our toes to shoot stuff back at him. He is from Montreal, so if I make it out of Ontario, I’ll def. give him a ring. Julie was really great as well. She’s from New Foundland and did ACLE 6 years ago. She is an artist by trade and did caricatures of all the kids which was a great treat for them. We worked well together and I had a really great time with them all. We are all very different people that seemed to share a bond and for two weeks were great friends. I hope to stay in touch with them as time moves forward.

All in all, I was very happy with my time in Pessano Con Bernago. I really hope I have the opportunity to travel to Italy again and visit my family again :)

San Pietro 1 + Ravenna

I am sitting in the coffee shop area under the hotel completely immersed in Italy!! There are people coming in and out ordering coffee. There is a table in front of me full of newspapers and Nonno’s just chatting about life. The accent here is a bit weird for me and I don’t understand a lot of what they say. Its almost as if they’re slurring their words. I pick up bits here and there. Its still cool though! I feel like I’m in a movie or something. On the bar there is food t munch, crackers, peppers, olives, salsa, veggies, nuts…. The usual Italian way! And on the other side of the bar is where the gelato is. We have it EVERY NIGHT after dinner. I am tempted to get some right now and after dinner but I will refrain. I’m sitting as far away as humanly possible to the gelato so I don’t get too tempted.

Unfortunately I got separated from Evan and Nicole. They went to some farming county and I am in San Pietro in Vincoli which is a town about 20 min bus ride from Ravenna. I am with 2 americans and 2 Australians. It’s been really cool talking to them and getting to know them, especially Gary and Siobhan because they’re from Melbourne. Everyone is really nice, and although I do miss my old crew of tutors, I have to meet new people! Ahahaha I can’t live the high life all summer! Even though I have been extremely fortunate thus far. The camp is a bit smaller. 49 kids and they’re all really well behaved. I’m teaching the same age level again :) I am going to be a pro soon! Ahahah I know it like the back of my hand.

On Sunday we went to Ravenna!! None of the shops were open but they had a little market style area with booths and people selling all sorts of things. From coins, stamps, clothes, jewllery, African stuff, antiques, pictures, WWII medals, lamps…. Etc etc etc ! It was awesome! There was a lot of antique jewllery that I loved looking at! The medals and coins too! A lot of this stuff was antiques which made it really cool to look through. I didn’t buy anything. I’ve been really good with my money thus far!! Everyone can be proud of me for that! Ahaha Usually my life savings is gone by this point. So we walked around there then saw some incredible churches!!! Ravenna is known for Mosaic technique. We went into a church that actually took my breath away. Pictures don’t do it any justice. All natural lighting, mosaics done with golds and blended with incredible accuracy. Each picture looks like it was done with a machine. It was incredible to think some of the stuff was done in the 6th century! I felt very honored to be able to view that myself and actually be in the presence of a building that old with millions and millions of people and memories attached to it. I was humbled.

Lone Train Ride...

Well! I travelled alone for the first time and made it to my destinations without missing any trains!!! The train from Brescia was 10 mins late which meant I only had 3 mins to make my connection in Verona. Obviously, I was sitting anxiously in my seat trying to calm myself down. I figured the more fired up I got the less I’d be able to concentrate when in Verona. Once the train stopped I ran out and looked for the signs with Train platforms and times Jules told me about. Of course the sign I looked at didn’t have my train! So I kind of freaked out in my head and decided to talk closer to the exit. I found another sign with my destination and time! I didn’t even look twice because by now I had about a minute and a half to catch the train. So I RAN to the platform like an idiot with my backpack and suitcase. I didn’t feel so stupid though because people are running all the time there. Thank you TreinItalia for that!!! Ahahah SOOOO I got to the platform and saw a train, stamped my ticket and ran on the train hoping for the best! There were 6 women who asked in Italian if it was the train for Bologna or Milano. I told them Bologna (because I thought I was right) and they sat down. Thank goodness I was right! If not, I would have sent them, and myself in the opposite direction! I found a seat, luckily just one other woman in my car and took a seat hoping for the best. It wasn’t until we actually got into the Bologna station that I felt at ease. You know how I am with geography, so I would have had no idea what direction I was going in! But I made it safe and sound! My first experience alone – kinda stressful, but fun! Ahahaa Let’s just hope I don’t have to do it too often! This running thing makes me anxious! Hahaha You never know if you’re going in the right way or half way to Switzerland

The Beauty of Brescia

Brescia was incredible! The right mix of mountains and city life make it my favourite place in Italy thus far. My week was perfect (minus being sick Wednesday). I could not have asked for a better week. Massimo and Laura were so accommodating and generous. Although Massimo’s English level was very low and Laura even smaller, we seemed to communicate and have conversations every evening at dinner! Their son Gio was awesome!!! He just wanted to play and have a good time. We played Mario Kart, Mario Tennis and Super Smash Bros. on Wii ! The house was gorgeous and on a mountain of course.

Driving up the mountain at the end of camp and in the morning was great. I truly felt like I was in Italy because of the winding roads, small cars and constant sick feeling in my stomach ahaha But the drive was breathtaking!!! I wish I had a constant video camera going on recording everything I saw. Once off the mountain and on the main roads, you could still see the beginnings of the Alps as well as buildings and city life. It just blew my mind everyday. I tried to soak in as much as possible. I was truly blessed to have been placed in such an amazing place for the week.

The camp kids were good. A bit rambunctious and we all lost our tempers on more than one occasion, in the long run, they were good kids. I taught 9-10 year olds again. I really like that group. Although their English level isn’t the best, they are willing to learn, try to communicate and want to play all the games! Our show was girls vs boys in a fight at school and becoming friends at the end. Haha They wrote it themselves!
The tutors were AWESOME! Again! I couldn’t ask for a better group. We seem to compliment each others teaching styles, and all jump in and help each other out. We get along fabulously and just have a great time together. I have laughed so much in the past 2 weeks just from the people I am around. It has been an incredible experience thus far. Carly and Cady are heading back home after this camp. Jules is heading to Liverpool. So that leaves Evan, Nicole and Myself. I really hope we get placed together, but, if not, I hope to have a great group again.

One night we had dinner on a mountain at a pizzeria! The sights were awesome, the air was crisp and clean and the food was deeeeeelicious! I had fungi pizza which is basically, tomato sauce, cheese and mushrooms. All fresh of course!!! Check out my picasa album for pix.

On the last morning, Laura, Gio, Pepita (their awesome Chihuahua) and I went to an ancient Roman Castle. It was from the 15th century. Mind Blowing!!! A lot of it is original and it was soooo cool to see the different lookout points, the brick, where executions took place, drawbridge and the views of the city! I was very lucky to have time to see the castle. It actually rained a bit and I never realized but they strategically built the pathways so the rain poured down and around, never allowing the castle to flood. I tried to get a picture but it didn’t work. We walked in the rain, all 3 of us under one umbrella, with Pepita in my arms. We walked soooo slow! Ahaha It was great fun. At the end of our travels on the way back to the car there was a hhuuggee puddle that you couldn’t get around. Of course we all got dirty! Laura put her foot in the puddle and screamed! It was hilarious. Gio and I were laughing histerically at her! Think of the stereotype of a woman seeing a mouse! That was Laura.

All in all, I am so happy with Brescia! I def. recommend it to anyone travelling to Italy. Its close to Venice and Verona, so all 3 can be hit in a few days :)

Castenaso- the small city with a big heart

I’m almost through my time here in Castenaso Italy. Time really does fly! I cannot believe I have already been here 6 days!!!! I know I haven’t been online a lot this week and Im sure everyone is wondering how Im doing, but my house family has to pay for the internet per use, so Ive kept that down to a minimum. But Im here writing again, so I will try my best to give the best play by play of the week so far.

We arrived on Sunday evening (after missing a train and having delay- thank goodness for Jules). Camp started on Tuesday so we had Monday free to do whatever we wanted! We decided since Bologna is so close, we would go and see what it was all about. It had a lot of great shopping, and although I did drool over some things, I didn’t buy anything. I am waiting to see something I fall in love with instantly, then I’ll make the purchase! So we did a bit of shopping and then went to the Piazza and saw some architecture. Two of the house mom’s don’t work so we got a nice little tour! :) We saw a Church that was intentionally made to be bigger than St Peter’s in Rome. However, when in construction, the Pope put a stop to any church being larger than St Peters, and alas, the one in Bologna is not finished! If you check out my pix you’ll see the top is much different than the bottom! As well, there are two towers in Bologna, one unfinished and one complete. Apparently, two very wealthy families wanted to see who could build the taller tower, but when they reached a certain height, they began to lean so one family stopped. The other finished and you can climb 500 steps to the top and check out the view of Bologna! Even decided to brave it and said it was really nice. I did it in Paris, that was enough steps for me! Ahaha

My house family is very nice. Giancarlo, Magda and Letizia. I have my own room with some cupboard space and shelves. They have been very accommodating, taking me to get a cell phone and to a festival (think veryyyyy small Corn Fest) so I have had a wonderful experience. Magda’s cooking is fantastic! My favourite dishes so far are a room temp pasta salad and homemade gelato!! Delicious. The gelato was green apple and vanilla. Sounds weird but it was incredible. At the festival we bought fried dough with warm nutella in the middle. It was incredible !! The best 500+ calories I have ever eaten! Ahahah I could have had about 20 but I refrained and had one lol

The kids at camp have been awesome! It’s a new camp and most of them are younger so their level of English isn’t very high. Its been tricky some days to get them to understand what I am saying and to cooperate. Fortunately, we have helpers who can translate if we really need them to. I had a group of 10 kids, 9-10 years old. I have taught them quite a few things and am happy with how things turned out. Tomorrow is our end of week show and I am a bit nervous. Although they have been practicing and learning their lines, they seem to forget or speak very quietly and mumble the words. I am not sure how to remedy this but I guess there isn’t much I can do now. I have tried my best with them and am hoping they will be wonderful, which I am sure they will! Everyone loves children. Our show is about the Olympics and different athletes. They came up with the idea themselves, I just put the script together for them.
The group of tutors I am working with are awesome. We’re all having a great time and are naturally meshing very well. I am very blessed to be working with the people I am. Jules is kind of the ring leader and rightly so, he’s been incredible and just completely an inspiration. I feel I have learned so much from him in one week, I really look forward to having another week working and learning with him!

Next week we head to Brescia. Sunday afternoon is our train ride. We have a connector in Verona, and only 10 mins to make the train, not going to lie, I hope we miss the connection so we can go see Juliet’s house in Verona! Ahahah It was on my list of things I want to do in Italy, so if I can do it on ACLE’s watch, why not !!?? PLUS, Verona is supposed to be breath taking, so it would be nice to be able to venture in the city for an hour or so. The next train would be 2 hours later, so that is what I am hoping for ;)

That’s about it for now. I am exhausted tonight! It has been go go go and for the first time, I’ll have almost everything done before dinner so I can actually relax a bit and maybe, if Im really lucky, be in bed around 9:30, 10 at the latest! Its 7:36 right now, and we haven’t eaten soooooo I am hoping for a quick dinner (not like wed when we ate for an hour), put some pix on their computer and call it a day

Peace and love and Italian food

on the road again....

On the train to Bologna right now. Our train from San Remo was delayed into Milan and we missed the first train out. We had just enough time to pee and run to the platform!!! Clearly, trains and I don’t get along well in Europe. Its scary to think I’ll be doing this for the next 8 weeks. Eeek.

So far the train rides have been alright. We’ve had a chance to talk and get to know each other a bit better since none of us really chatted during orientation week. The girls seem really nice, and Evan is great fun! Jules is, Jules! I think he’ll be fantastic to work under though. I’m going to learn a lot from my new Liverpooldian friend.

We meet our new families tonight. I am a little apprehensive, only because I am nervous they won’t speak English. Communicating with them will be difficult but at the same time it’ll force me to really work on my Italian and better myself at the language. I will try very hard to improve on it, but it would still be nice if they spoke a bit more English than I did Italian.

I’m beginning to think about camp Tuesday morning and am a bit apprehensive. Jules seems to have great faith in us so I am assuming it’ll be fine, but I guess the fear of the unknown is getting the better of me. Also, I’m so used to being completely prepared and at this point, I don’t know what I’m teaching yet! I’d like to have a game plan in action for Tuesday morning. I am hoping we can get everything sorted out tonight so I can at least work on some stuff tomorrow. If I don’t have that luxury, then I’m not sure what to do. Plan a bunch of games and hope they fit into the curriculum and can be taught. I’m not so much worried about activities as I am about teaching the material, I’d like to look through the book and find out what is expected of me and what I have to teach. So it will be interesting and a good experience for me. Because I have no choice about being prepared or not it will be good I hope!!

Well I should really stop writing about it because I’m starting to get stressed out! Gah!

san remo 2

Well, I know its been a few days since I’ve written but this was one hell of a busy week!! To sum it up in one word, intense !!! We learned so much, grammar, songs, games, history, ate, slept, danced, drank! It was just a non stop week. We had training from 9-5 everyday and it usually went over time. We had to eat at 8:30 every night but sometimes we had to walk an hour to get to the restaurant. As a result, we’d have just enough time to go to the hotel, shower, change and go to dinner!! The food has all been awesome so far! The only issue I’ve been having is that I am on carb overload and feeling kinda shitty about it. My tummy is not feeling so great, I’d like to have some more fruits and veggies, but if that isn’t possible then I’ll take what I can get! I am in Italy after all! I can’t really complain too much :)
One night we went to dinner in “the old city” part of San Remo. It is a really incredible area of the city that was built before roads were made. It’s basically all slopes and rocks but the buildings are all close together and people live in them. It reminded me of a stereotypical sight of Italy with clothes lines out the windows and just massive buildings that are like apartment buildings. I took a lot of pictures in this area. The lighting was all yellow and orangy so I tried to capture it as best as I could with my camera. I look forward to hearing peoples reactions to this part of the city.
The only crappy thing is that we didn’t get a chance to go to the beach :s We tried one beautiful afternoon, but walked the wrong way and couldn’t find one unfortunately. Although it’s a coast there aren’t a lot of spots designated as beach areas. Thursday we were all set to go in the morning, packed our suits and towels but it ended up being a really cloudy day so there really wasn’t any point.
It hasn’t really rained here. There were a few periods of a little drizzle and one morning it was raining. But other than that its been clear skies (except our beach day) and quite warm! Ive already sweat and it’s only been orientation thus far!
On Wednesday we got the opportunity to go to a school and kind of work with the kids. That for me was the highlight of my week!!! They were awesome! 95% of them just wanted to play and enjoy their time with us. They participated in the games and seemed to really enjoy themselves. My group worked with 11 year olds and 8 year olds. I liked the 11 year olds better because they understood more English and we could do more with them. I feel like the younger ones are going to be a challenge just because it will be difficult to teach them so they can comprehend and move forward with their English abilities.
This morning I had to say goodbye to Alyssa and Mario after 2 weeks. We all got separated and sent to different areas of Italy. I am going to Castenosa which is in the Bologna area. It’s a new camp so we basically have to set the standards and get it up and running. It’s a great opportunity because we are establishing this camp and can use all the materials we just learned. But at the same time scary because none of the kids have been to camp and I’m not sure how much English they’ll know or understand. However, any experience is a learning experience whether good or bad. So I am staying positive and just looking on the bright side!! I am finally starting what I came here to do so that’s really cool. I am going with 5 other people. 2 boys and 3 girls. All of which are from Canada or the US except for our leader or returning Tutor, he’s from Liverpool. He’s a huge Beatles fan so I’m sure we’ll get along just swimmingly!
We met two really cool guys that we’re not going to be teaching with this week. Mark – he’s from BC, 27 but he’s been travelling Europe since September! I Envy him for his ability to do so, but also the fact that he can live out of a suitcase and not really be bothered by it! I’ve only been doing it for 2 weeks and I already want to kill myself! Hahaha So he’s been really cool, reminds me of a modern say hippy in a way because he just goes with the flow and loves life wherever he is. We also met Vinny – he’s from New York and he’s 19. He’s been really fun to hang out with and imitate his New York accent! He went with us to the Old City so we made him pose in some artistic pictures we were trying to create.
I’m sitting here in the hotel right now alone, just writing and biding my time. It’s kind of chilly here today so I’m hoping I won’t get too cold! I’m not sure what to do yet. I’m supposed to be meeting the other girls in my group in about 30 mins but with this weather I’m not sure what will be on the agenda! I wish there was a museum or something we could go to for the day. There isn’t a mall or anything; it’s all outdoors so I’m praying for dry weather hehe We’ll see where the day takes us! There’s also a bunch of people who have the week off and are roaming the city as well. We may just find people along our way and hang out somewhere.
I’ve been really missing everyone this week. Even though I’ve been so busy, I still have time to think about everyone, especially at night when I’m laying in bed. I talked to my mom for the first time last night since Paris and she didn’t know it but I was kind of crying a little in the convo. It was just so nice to hear her voice and talk to her. I almost miss everyone LESS when I don’t talk to them! It’s like when I talk to them it brings up memories or sad feelings because I know I still have a long way to go before I make it home! Another 3 full months and about a week! That’s alright though, it’s all part of the process and it will be fun! I miss the depot ppl too! I’m sure BTS is starting to come in and they’re trying to find places to put it all! Hheheheh I’m sure everything will work out smooth there but it still would have been nice to go there and help them with it.
It’s weird how I’ve only been gone a few weeks and already, so many things have changed in my perception and thoughts on things. I’m still not sure exactly what I’m doing when I get home. Hopefully I’ll have a bit of money left so I won’t be broke from the get go ! hehehe I really want to go out to BC for school and to live, but then it makes me sad that I’ll just be leaving everyone again :s It’s such an odd feeling to want something and be terrified of it at the same time. That is how I am feeling with this job too! I’ll be fine with all the big group activities, but one on one in the mornings I’m a bit nervous for. Im just going to go in as prepared as I can be and hope it will all work out! I guess I feel the same way with life too!! Hehee Whatever will be, will be!
Well, This is quite a long blog! But I figure I haven’t written in a while hehehehe Hopefully my home will have either internet or wifi so I can stay more in touch
xoxo

san remo 1

We safely made it to San Remo without any wrong turns or platforms! The train ride was nice, only an hour long which was perfect. We sat with 2 other Americans like us travelling and this sketchy guy who didn’t say a word to any of us the whole trip. We didn’t want to miss our stop so we got ready before the train stopped and were ready to go. Alyssa couldn’t open the door so we told her to push the button. Upon doing so, an alarm went off and when the door opened, the train tracks were there !!! So we kinda panicked but Mario opened the other side and we safely made it onto the platform. There was someone else from ACLE who got off the train so he asked us right away if we were also teaching and we made a new friend! His name is Mark, really nice down to earth guy. He’s been travelling Europe since September so he’s got quite a few stories! Anyway, he ended up being one of Mario’s roommates! So it worked out well.
My two roommates seem very nice as well. Laura is from England and Ashligne is from Boston. Initially they messed up Alyssa’s room so she asked if she could just room with me and it seemed alright but at dinner she was asked to go to her original assigned room. It was kind of sad to part but I guess we’ll have to do it eventually.
We had the afternoon to explore San Remo which is a really area. Its small and not very touristy which is nice to see what an authentic Italian city is like. Its right on the Rivera so the beach is really nice! On Tuesday we only have half a day so we’re probably going to hit the beach and do some laundry J We walked along the water and down the main street. Had an amazing lunch at a place along the water but on the street. Bononcini and tomato lettuce salad and Panini with warm prosciutto and mozzarella melted. It was absolutely to die for! I am kind of glad we’re with ACLE now and our meals are provided because I am running low on funds! Ahahaha We seem to be spending most of our money on food and water !!! It def isn’t like at home where I can drink all the water I want. I’ve cut down but have noticed a difference in the dryness of my skin and I’m always thirsty. I guess I’m just going to have to get used to it though.
We also stopped at an internet café to send out a few emails since we couldn’t get through to our families! Let everyone know we’re alive and well. It was also a regular café so Mario and I had a nice espresso! My first one in the homeland! My was it strong and delicious!!
Tonight we all went to a meet and greet with the tutors. People are coming from all over and everyone has a story to tell. It was nice to kind of meet everyone and say hello. I look forward to orientation tomorrow and all that it has to bring. Im sure it will be a great time! It’s been a while since I’ve got to play drama games with people over the age of 12 so Im looking forward to being silly and having a great time with all the fellow tutors!

1st Class Hoodlums

Well today was interesting!!!

Nice today was absoluetly gorgeous!!! We had a bit of an interesting train ride. We were in the wrong car and almost didn't make it. We were running down the platform like in a movie and the woman was yelling GET IN GET IN! So we went in the nearest car and about 10 seconds later the doors closed. We weren't in our proper seats so we had to sit on the floor in the main entrance of the compartment in 1st class! Where you step onto the train and go either right or left through glass doors to your spots. We were like the hoodlums for first class. The train attendant guy didn't seem to care that we were sitting right on the floor. There were tons of seats of available but because we were 2nd class tickets we weren't allowed to sit in them. We sat there for about 3 hours and then finally were able to move to some cushioned benches in second class. Luckily, we weren't the only ones sitting on the floor and in the stairwells so we didn't feel so ridiculous. It never seems to fail, we always get lost, on the wrong train, miss the stop! Something!

We finally made it to Nice in one piece and luckily our hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the train station. The hotel is really nice! We only booked it last night and it turned out to be decent. Its in a gated area which is great for the feel of safety. "The Hotel Durante", its very clean and spacious and reasonably priced, I def recommend it. The French Riveria is beautiful !! Absoluetly stunning! It reminds me a lot of Florida or California. Very americanized but gorgeous at the same time. There are homes built into the mountains right on the water. There are also palm trees and quite a few fountains. It was more low key than Paris but an amazing place to visit for a day! There also isn't a whole lot to do, so one day was perfect for us. We're uploadng pix so you'll have to check them out :) We ate dinner tonight on the beach. Our table was about 20 feet from the water. It was a bit chilly but it really didn't get much better than that! Beach, Dinner, French Rivera! We then decided to play in the Rivera a bit and of course, I was wearing a white skirt and got wet .... I looked like I peed myself or something. Im not sure why it always happens to me lol

Tomorrow morning we leave for San Remo. From what we understand, we'll have the afternoon to explore then be back for a meet and greet with all the other tutors who are beginning orientation when we do. It's time to get out of vacation mode and into teaching mode! Although we've only been gone a few days, we've had a lifetime of fun and adventure. Im so glad I got to experience Paris and Nice! Its been so incredible thus far and I cannot wait to see what happens next! Im not sure if there is going to be weefee in San Remo so this could possibly be my last blog for a bit. we'll see !

Last Day in Paris

Bon Soir !

Our last day in Paris was def. an eventful one! We got lost - again! On the RER. The thing is, you think you're on the right track but they veer like 4 ways then veer again another 2 ways so it's frustrating to find your way because you think you're going in the right direction then it'll change on you!

We left our hotel around 9:30 and didn't make it to Versailles until after 1pm! Ridiculous! ahahaha But it was a place to see! I still canot wrap my head around the size of the place! Standing on the steps looking out to the gardens it is gorgeous and huge! As far deep as the eyes can see. Marie Antoinette had her own house off the gardens. It was just excessively huge, but such a sight! We were trying to discuss what it would have been like back then living in such a grand palace and we really have no comprehension of the times and what it would have been like. The only thing I have to say though, is if they could afford such a lavish lifestyle, why did they not invest more in personal hygene !?

We took our usual afternoon rest and came back to the hotel for a bit before heading out again to meet some of Mario's friends (Tom and Kim from DRED) for dinner and onto the Eiffel Tower. For our last meal, we enjoyed some delicious nutella, bananna, whipped cream crepes ! Trying to take in all the Parisian food traditions :)

We went to the Tower one last time tonight and saw it sparkle from a mile away. It was simply breath taking once again and we just stood there and appreciated what was in front of us. I couldn't have been more content inside! It is just such an overwhelming experience but in the best way to visit places like this. I am truly happy with my experiences with Paris and would recommend it :)

We are leaving for Nice in the morning. I am looking forward to that little day trip! After that, onto San Remo!!!

love you and miss you.

Paris end of Day 1 and Day 2

Well, day 2 here and we're taking full advantge of the weefee ( as our Parsian landlord called it). Facebooking, uploading pix and what not.

Last night we decided to walk and ended up at the Louvre and Eiffel Tower! It was quite the distance but so worth it. The closer we go to the Eiffel Tower, I began to get butterflies and when I saw it up close, I got goosbumps all over! That for me was the moment I realized Im in Paris !! We also saw it after dark and it was breath taking! All lit up! I almost cried :)
To end the evening, I decided to throw on a load of laundry but didn't realize by the time we all showered it was 1:30am ! The walls are paper thin so I feel as if the neighbors were not impressed. As well, we couldn't sleep and Mario came in our room at 2am badgering us about what time we're getting up- he wanted 8am so in my hasty tired state I said "Jesus Mario! Why don't we just get dressed and go now!!" hahaha And that was how we ended our first day in paris.

Today we woke up and decided to start our morning with pain au choclat and some Starbucks! After that, we were on our way t0 Hermes where Alyssa picked up some perfume for her Nonna. IN the bag they stuffed it with samples of all sorts of perfumes and creams! Very generous in my opinion. After that we wanted to go to Notre Dame but still haven't mastered the metro so we walked and found a really tall skinny monutment which must be important but we're not sure what it was. Finally, we made our way to Notre Dame, walked the whole way! It was an incredible structure!!!! The architecture blew me away. We all lit candles and said a prayer. The religious genes came out hehe

We went for our nice meal at lunch and the waitress didn't speak a word of English. She was the first person we've encountered that didn't speak English so it was difficult to communicate. According to Mario, "Shes the worst one yet" ahahah We had a good chuckle with that.

We went up the Arch de Triumphe (300 stairs) and looked out over the city. The way it is lined up and placed is awesome! I love the design of the buildings.

On the way back to our appartment, we stopped for some groceries and are relaxing now until tonight.
Tonight was fun! We took the metro (after 2 days we finall figured out how to use it) to the Sacre Couer area where the Moulin Rouge is also located. You could tell you were getting closer to the Moulin Rouge because every store was some type of sex store or whorehouse or strip club. Some of the names where more descreet if you will, such as Sex Drone but then some were just out there like Pussy's. Needless to say, it was very interesting. It was a pretty sketchy part of town, so we went to the Moulin, took our pix and hitailed it our of there! ahahaha Moulin Rouge was very small. I thought it was it's own building, but it's just one of many on the strip of love.
Sacre Couer was a site to see! Located on Montmare and a stunning building. Archetectually, not as impressive as Notre Dame but the stairs leading up to the church are on either side of huge patches of grass so there were people sitting everywhere, talking, eating, smoking. It was very relaxing.
Then, as per usual, we said we wanted to go to bed early - 2:30am we were still up! It was a long but eventful day!

Paris- Day 1

Alright!! So Im sure you've been anxiously awaiting my first post. We're alive and well in Paris :)
The flight was fantastic, nothing but smooth sailing. The food was good too, chicken for dinner and mashed potatoes (which burned the roof of my mouth), but other than that it wasn't so bad.
There was a random call for a doctor around 2:30 am. An old man was in need of assitance.
Once in Paris, we got to our lovely appartment which is really spacious and extremely nice. The cab ride to our app. was interesting - the cabbie went on a rant for about 25 minutes about how the English language is dominating blah blah blah basically we're taking over the world and it sucks ! ahahahaha
We've seen the Arc de Triumph, and down the Champs Elysees. Everything is so chic here, and the building designs are amazing !!
We also got lost by taking the REI instead of the Metro which took us out of Paris, into more of a residential area as well as the business sector. It was quite a laugh when we realized we weren't going anywhere we should but thats alright! Already a story to tell. We also had some baguette's while walking the Champs Elysees so we felt very Parisian.
Im at the appartment now. We're all blogging and catching up on emails. Tonight we're going to see the Eiffel Tower and Im very excited to see it all lit up! Then dinner and hopefully an early turn in because we're all exhausted.
I'll Keep in Touch !!!

The Adventure begins... soon...

Well, as most of you know, I got a job in Italy for the summer. I decided to create a blog to track my progress, upload pictures, and have a means for people to see what I've been up to!

Please feel free to pass along the blog name so other people can view my adventures as well!

I am very excited about the trip and am currently trying to figure out where I'd like travel and for how long. Ideally, I am thinking:
France, Greece, Italy, England, Ireland and Scotland!

I will update periodically before the trip, but the blog won't be full force until I am over seas
